“The next moment I was -knocked, flat with the leopard on top of my back. Its claws went in the side of my neck. I ran my hands back to jab it in the face and keep ‘the teeth from my neck. I felt a’ chunk go out of rny neck. And another from my lower back.
“Somehow we .rolled over. I raised my knees and feet to keep the leopard from disemboweling me and jabbed it in the’ face with my hands. Then my tracker, who was a well-trained, careful man, put his light rifle against the leopard’s ear and fired.

As a car rally driver, Bali took part in innumerable Kenya rallies and competed four times in the East Africa Safari. He always drove confidently, with a bit of hootch inside him. It was no mean feat to complete the full course in all the four Safaris and win a place in one
As a big game hunter he was unique, being the first non-white ever to be admitted in a exclusive professional Hunters’ Association. His clients included American millionaires, Indian Maharajas, Greek oil tycoons, and Ethiopian diplomats. With his six foot hulk, 215 Ibs. of muscle, shock hair and bristling handlebar moustache, he cut a dashing figure for which pretty women often made a bee-line. But he had no time for them.

Iqbal or Bali as he was better known was roly-poly, portly rather than fat. He was a white hunter and took tourists on safaris to shoot lions and rhinos. He was also into motor-racing driver. He had been a consultant to MGM when they were shooting films in East Africa and claimed to have known Ava Gardner. Years later I met Ava Gardner in Paris and asked if she recalled Bali?
